Adaptation of organic quinoa cultivation in the Region of Murcia and its applications

Project

The aim of the ECOQUINOA project is to study the possibilities of adapting organic quinoa cultivation to the agro-climatic conditions of the Region of Murcia.

To this end, trials of different varieties of quinoa will be carried out on two farms in the Region, in which the use of beneficial organisms such as fungi and bacteria and the application of different irrigation strategies will also be tested.
The project also seeks to develop new food and cosmetic products from quinoa and some of its by-products.

UPCT’s participation in the project is focused on the evaluation of the economic viability of the production process of organic quinoa cultivation, including not only the analysis of its profitability, but also its possible environmental impacts.

The project partners are: Toro Verde Group; Cebas-CSIC; University of Murcia; Polytechnic University of Cartagena; Tahe Cosmetic Products; Neurona Engineering; and Almond Laboratory

The project is financed through the Call for Public Aids to finance Strategic projects. Included in the Research and Innovation Strategy for Intelligent Specialisation – RIS3MUR Strategy by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and co-financed by the ERDF Operational Programme for the Region of Murcia 2014-2020.
