The meeting, held in Murcia, brought together key stakeholders from the agricultural and irrigation ecosystem to address the challenges of water modernization in the Region.

On March 17, 2026, Hotel Nelva in Murcia hosted the Co-Creation Workshop on Water Management in Agriculture and Irrigation Modernization in the Region of Murcia, an initiative promoted במסגרת the European project WISEMED (Mediterranean Joint Water Management and Conservation Sustainable Solutions), funded by the European Union through the Interreg NEXT MED programme.

WISEMED was created with the aim of responding to one of the Mediterranean’s major structural challenges: water scarcity in agriculture. This region, home to more than 180 million people, has only 1.4% of the world’s freshwater resources despite accounting for 6.3% of the global population. In this context, the project promotes sustainable water management solutions through transnational cooperation, the implementation of pilot ecological irrigation experiences, the strengthening of local capacities, and the promotion of inclusive planning models and public-private collaboration.

In this context, and given the relevance of Murcia as one of the most dynamic agricultural areas across the entire Mediterranean arc, the Water and Plant Production Department of CEBAS-CSIC organized this participatory workshop focused on sustainable water management and the modernization of irrigation systems.

The event brought together a broad representation of the regional agri-food ecosystem, including farmers, irrigation communities, research centers, cooperatives, and technology providers. Particularly noteworthy was the participation of institutions and companies integrated into AGRITECHMURCIA, including CEBAS-CSIC as the organizing entity, as well as RITEC, NUTRICONTROL, CAUDAL, ODINS, AZUD, ECAMED, and OTK.

During the meeting, participants shared knowledge and experiences regarding the current state of irrigation practices in the Region of Murcia, identified the main challenges associated with managing increasingly limited water resources, and reflected on the technical, economic, and environmental implications linked to the modernization of irrigation systems.

In addition, the workshop served as a space to define common priorities and generate recommendations aimed at future local action plans, both in Murcia and in the other countries that are part of the international WISEMED consortium, which includes partners from Italy, Jordan, Tunisia, Spain, and Lebanon.

AGRITECHMURCIA’s participation in this type of initiative reinforces its role as a benchmark ecosystem in agricultural innovation, efficient water management, and knowledge transfer, actively contributing to the development of sustainable solutions for a more resilient, technified agriculture adapted to the challenges of the present and the future.

Through actions such as this workshop, the WISEMED project demonstrates that co-creation among science, business, local territories, and institutions is a key tool for transforming water-related challenges into real opportunities for modernization and sustainability in Mediterranean agriculture.
